Does anyone know what this bird is? It was dusk, February (today 15/02/23) and at Alderley Edge near Manchester.

  • Ps - because it was dusk, the colour/s of the bird were difficult to distinguish. It was about the size of maybe a blackbird and it appeared dark in colour
  • Sounds like two plops and then a wheeze sort of sound???? I've got no idea. This site tends to not be very successful with sound identifications and the forum is very quiet these days anyway. You may not get too many responses. Hopefully you'll have an opportunity to get a photo, and even poor quality ones are often enough to i.d. from.

Hi Robbo, I remember about a year ago I think I was chatting to you on here about swifts and I think it was you whose account got removed or something like that. I may be wrong and it may be someone else (apologies if it is). Just curious to see what went on? Sorry vic this had nothing to do with your question.

    Hi,

Yep well remembered. Here's my swift from last Summer....

Never managed a good photo, but swiftlet remained an introvert and always had bright sky behind.....that's my excuse.

  • Sorry, I can't help. I tried several times using 'Bird id' with no success ...

Wow, I am jealous. The fledglings can be very slow to move just having the odd look now and again. No luck here with getting them to the boxes. Lots of birds flying around house but that was it. The housemartins were very successful after I put up a nest bowl and put some calls on in August ( similar to what you do with swifts) and they found the cup immediately. Fingers crossed for 2023.
