Bunting ID?

Is this a Corn Bunting? I'm thinking it is, if not could it be a female reed Bunting?

Many thanks.

  • Looks like a juvenile Linnet to me. Feel free to wait for other opinions

  • Thanks guys, there were Linnets in the area so that would make sense. Can I ask what tells you it's a Linnet and not a Bunting?
  • In reply to sb67:

When I look at a bird I don't come with preconceptions as to whether this is a bunting or a finch. I just try to identify it from what I see. In this case the grey head and something about the eyes looked like a Linnet - possibly a juvenile. There are similarities between bunting and finches and those people more expert than me have decided that certain ones of these are of a different genus. One of the main differences, from what I've read, seems to be about the structure of the jaw.

Here's a LINK to an explanation from the RSPB about buntings which you may find of interest.

Oh by the way this is a Corn Bunting/
