Dragonfly ID please

Can anyone tell me what this is please?

  • Hi Rich
My first thought is female Banded Demoiselle, although wait for more expert opinions! Ideally for firmer ID's you need side on, head on and directly above views..... never easy when they perch over a river or somewhere equally convenient! Also, location and habitat can be helpful, in both ruling things in AND out.

  • It looks like a male emerald damselfly, but I'm not an expert so could be way off beam. I say male because it appears to have anal appendages and not an ovipositor, damselfly because it's to flimsy to be a dragonfly and emerald because it is.
  • I am no damselfly expert, but agree with PB.

Thanks. I’ll try to get side on pictures in future. Reading about Banded Demoiselle, it says they are often found alongside slow flowing rivers. I saw this alongside the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal (which hardly flows at all) so I guess the habitat fits.
