Little bird constantly tapping on patio door

Hi there, do you know what bird this is please?

It keeps hovering near our windows and patio door and tapping on the glass. It's been constant for last 2 days lol... Started off as cute now a bit annoying, but also don't want it to hurt itself.

I've put foil on the handles, hoping the reflection would prevent it, but nope bird keeps visiting. Any tips please? I'm assuming it thinks the reflection is another bird?

  • Need to stop the reflection with some paper on the glass or something as it thinks it's a rival its seeing in your glass

Post edit: it's a lovely long tailed tit ;-)

  • Any update on your previous post regarding the Robins nest Candice ?

Would be nice to know ;-)

Thank you Linda257. So cute (albeit annoying) , I've never seen them before in our garden, lots of others though.

Paper might be hard as they're big patio doors.....

Unfortunately something attacked the nest shortly after, so I never got to enjoy it..... If only I'd known the nest was there before I started clearing. Such an odd place in the middle if the garden in the planter! Will make sure I check it next time though.
  • In reply to Candice:

If its only sitting on the handle tapping then temporary paper around that area should be suffice

Oh well these things happen but just makes us more aware of nature in the future ;-)

  • Definitely a long tailed tit. A lot of birds tap on doors and windows at this time of year. I think they are feasting on teeny baby insects and spiders or their eggs when I have seen this behaviour. Though at my dad’s house they tap on the windows to let him know that the bird feeders are empty and need refilling, and they keep tapping until they are refilled… clever birds!

Some blackbirds and robins do the clever bits referred to. Most other species are highly unlikely to. At this time of year, the primary reason for tapping at windows is reflections. The insect feeding around windows,in my experience, is when more insects are about, and when more juvenile birds are about, in Summer.

    Thank you everyone, very helpful.

Yes our Robins let me know when the bird feeders are empty lol!

Unfortunately the silly tit is tapping in different places... Might as well just get used to it :-).... Very distracting when I'm on a work call though lol!
