Hi, can anyone identify this please? We have a pair in our garden on the outskirts of Edinburgh. We're thinking Common or Lesser Redpoll?

I know. I think Common and lesser Redpoll are good examples of  that.   lesser doesn’t allways mean less common  but 

If you pretend  that back when they got given there taxon names some of the   birds  with common in there name used to be  the most common of there  species back then

then  it would be interesting if it turned out one of the birds  with  Common in there name thats less common now did happen to be more common back then   

Actually Common with some species meant they were to be found on common ground,Common Gull is an example of this
