This flew into the tree in Oxford today making a noise like something from a classic western. Very different to the usual local common buzzard riffraff.

Red Kites are very common in the Thames Valley, certainly as far out as Oxford. I'm surprised you haven't seen one before. They have a greater wing span than Buzzard but not as broad wings. Where I live near Reading they are practically a garden bird.
