I noticed this magpie did not seem to flinch or fly away when I was in and out of my garden for most of the day yesterday, and it liked to go in out of the flower bushes ( I have loads, when it come to parents who are both garden enthusiasts!)
Assuming it was just dehydrated due to the hot weather, i did give it some water in a flat dish, but it chose to ignore it completely and decide to help itself from the water sprinkler that was sitting aside.
I contacted the local RSPB centre, but due to the circumstances surrounding COVID - 19, no-one is able to come out to assess the situation.
I'm not sure what the signs of vulnerability are, however, because it seems to scare off any other birds that land in the garden! Not sure if that's normal, as it's definitely not nesting?
It won't let you come near it, as it flies off into the bush.
Thankfully, it didn't become a late night snack for anything, but i'm not sure how things will be tonight for it. It did eat some bird seed though!
Any tips and advice will be much appreciated!
Kindest,
CuriousBirdie x
I'm no expert, but if the magpie can fly off, then it can't be all that bad.
However, if it is injured, or has young, it could be quite protective and likely to attack any attempt to rescue it, so it is probably best left alone, just provide food and water which will help it, and any others in the vicinity, to get trough any challenging times.
I'm sure someone will pop in with some more experienced advice.

You're welcome

First, I'm sorry to read the magpie has passed away, it is disheartening and you have done your best.
Nature can be harsh at times, not just to us, but to itself, so it's nice to see there are people who will try to help where they can, just sometimes, you can only do so much and nature for its own good reasons why it won't let you do more, even though you feel you should do more.
Stay with the forum, we are a good bunch of well meaning people even if on this posting it seems the opposite, and many of us do feel it when a life is lost, but its accepting to a certain extent, it is nature.
