Female Spanish Sparrow?

I'm new to bird spotting - I'm struggling a bit with this sparrow. It just didn't look to me like a female House sparrow? Or juvenile?

When I looked at other sparrows, it was more like a female Spanish Sparrow than anything else? But .. the crown looks grey to me?

I may just be getting muddled

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Hi Hathers,
First of all Spanish Sparrows don't occur in the UK (as far as I'm aware). Secondly, female Spanish Sparrows are usually indistinguishable from female House Sparrows. I must say I wouldn't have noticed anything out of the ordinary with the sparrow in your photos. I think all birds can have some minor colour variation. It took me a while to realise it was a montage of three photos - I thought initially there were three birds. LOL
  • Thanks for you help - I’d been reading up: I didn’t realise sightings of Spanish Sparrows are one in two decades, if that, in the UK, and the females of the species are so similar to house sparrows. I think I got confused looking at all the different photos online. This one is answered.
