Bird in garden - some kind of thrush?

I wonder if anybody can help identify this bird seen today in Gloucestershire.  I would think it's some kind of thrush but none seem to match my book!

Thanks

  • Hi James, it looks like a Meadow Pipit. Quite a bit smaller than a thrush although with the stripey breast I can see why you might have thought that. They have a very fine bill and if you look closely at your second photo you can see the very long hind claw wrapping round the branch. That's a characteristic feature of pipits but particularly a Meadow Pipit.

  • Ah ha, thanks very much! I'd not heard of them before, the claw is a good tip, thanks.
