Mystery raptor

Saw this raptor whilst walking near Hyde Hall in Essex yesterday. Sitting perched on a tree branch overlooking the lake and wetland area. Initially thoughts it was a kestrel but it's wings covered it's tail when perched and it had russet legs, speckled breast. And didnt move off like a Kestrel.

Maybe a Hobby?

It's a bad pic but any thoughts?

  • Hi Andrew, Don't think it is a Hobby as they are summer visitors to UK (April - October). Wait for other more expert opinions but I'm wondering if it is a male Kestrel.

  • I agree it is unlikely to be a Hobby at this time of year. If you are confident it didn't fly like a Kestrel then a possibility is a Merlin as they do have different flight patterns and winter is often the best time to see them in much of the UK, but I'm afraid I can't confirm it or not from the photo
