I think it's most probably a Small white butterfly (Pieris rapae) there are similar images here www.lepiforum.de/lepiwiki.pl . It should emerge in the Spring, all going well. We've had loads around our greenhouse, but then we had some nice cabbage plants there before the caterpillars ate them all!

Thank you so much. It's the first pupa I have identified (with your help)! 
By planting lots of butterfly-friendly plants, I'm getting lots of butterflies , but not sure how to find pupae. 
I think I need to get out with my kneeling-pad and rummage around!
