Green bird with black eye make up!? Spain

Hi Nigel and Dave - I think you must be right. I just wondered if it was a Spanish variant - but obviously not.

Male Greenfinch usually do have a dark spot in front of the eye although in my experience this can vary a lot from bird to bird.
