Unknown tree - hickory?

Sorry, this is not a bird question, but I imagine there must be some tree experts amongst the community members here so I thought it was worth asking.

I have to apologise that the photos are not the most helpful but the height of the tree and lack of zoom makes it hard to get anything better!

We live in France and bought a house with this impressive tree in the garden a few months ago. It is about 25m tall. For ages we were convinced it was an ash, but over the past few days we've spotted some yellow-green nuts appearing on it! (It did also have catkins in the spring which puzzled us a bit).

The leaves are long and narrow with smooth edges, and appeared later than all the other trees in our garden. (Just found another couple of pictures taken in May with catkins visible.)

I'm now wondering if this is a hickory tree - it seems to share a lot of features but I haven't yet found a variety which really seems to match....?
