This bad boy was fluttering around yesterday, its was quite noisy but its the tail that fascinated me looks part bee
It's both what you do and the way that you do it!
You cannot fly like an eagle with the wings of a wren. William Henry Hudson (1841 - 1922)
Think it's a Hummingbird Hawkmoth, going by the big black-and-white abdomen tip. Compare to this one: http://oxford-consultants.tripod.com/Images/HummingbirdHawkMoth5.jpg

Shape is spot on but colouring is wrong, definately more brown than black, a but a good point in the right direction thank you :)
Yep yep futher searching for other images confirm it
The colour threw me at first too, haven't seen one this dark before, but most moth species are quite variable in colour. Not so much in shape :)
ETA - it's an uncommon visitor to the UK but going by the number of reports on here lately, 2010 is shaping up to be a good HH year :)
Cool, nice thing to spot whilst in work :)
Hi mpiekp
Great spot to see a moth like that one you have
He sound quite big if he was a bit buzzy.
