What made this nest?

Found this nest on the ground in a field in Wales - although could have fallen from the tree. The inner structure is made of mud and it's covered in twigs. It's quite large (you can see my foot in one photo) but the nest opening is fairly small in comparison.

  • My guess would be either pigeon or dove, and I think it may have fallen from the tree.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • As Catlady says pigeon/dove or even a corvid nest that has blown out of a tree.

  • Thank you both :)

The inner nest is made of mud with a small entrance to get inside - would a pigeon or dove do this?
  • Someone has suggested it might be a squirrel drey
  • Another possibility although I'm not sure they line with mud.

  • Hi Emily. In my opinion the nest was built by Magpies. They build covered nests and use mud and turf in the construction. The inner nest chamber would have been lined with softer materials when the nest was in use.
