goshawk kills

Having never seen a goshawk in the wild, maybe a glimpse, I have found circles of feathers, neatly arrangeD, from the following birds, all strong and evasive fliers. Wood pigeon, Jay, Buzzard! and now Woodcock. These are all mainly or exclusively forest species and their size rules out Sparrowhawk. To catch a Woodcock takes some doing! What animal is the killer? No photos but just neatly arranged circles of feathers. Leo  Oban

  • Do you know if the area has a history of Goshawks nesting there? They are huge things so no doubt they could take out most of that, not sure if they would go for a Buzzard though as they aren't exactly small or harmless...Goshawks are also pretty rare, only a few hundred in the UK...Alan is right, Goshawks live in dense woodland, one of the reasons they're so hard to spot. They begin to return to nesting sites in February, in which case they apparently do fantastic mating 'dances' in the air with their mate in the early spring...

  • Buzzard would be incredibly unusual prey for a Goshawk. Some more details on the circumstances might give clues (e,g, is there an obvious perch above the feathers?). Otherwise I'm not sure you can rule out 'human' as the animal involved.
