This was up in the holly tree a couple of weeks ago. I'd forgotten about it.
Have they hatched yet, can you see any caterpillars?
I'd better go and have a look. If there were caterpillars they wouldn't last long.

It's difficult to tell from the photo, so I'll ask the question: are you sure they were eggs and not baby spiders clumped together, as they do, with just a few bold individuals dotted about? It might also explain why they've dispersed.
I didn't get that close. They might have been baby spiders, in which case the birds probably had them.
Nigel O is correct, these are the spiderlings of a garden spider.
