A bird I have not come across before, please help me identify

Hi

Today I spotted a pair of birds in search of food outside my window. I managed to grab a few pics before my camera battery died (typical!) I only managed to catch one of the pair. It was bigger than a black bird but smaller than a pigeon if that helps! It was spotted in Leeds UK

Thanks

    Hi Eilbee

What a super picture and report about your Jays

You certainly have an active group of Jays in your garden,

So you must have the environment they are searching for, along with those acorns that they love so much

    Regards

  • Hi Remondo, and welcome to the forum.

How lucky, and how wonderful to have a jay in your garden. I have never, ever seen one and yet I get other members of the crow family.

Lovely photos, and also Elibee - I can just imagine the Red Alert warnings when you submitted your count! Did they accept it in the end?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hi Remondo,

congratulations on having two Jays in you garden!  I too have never even seen one so you are very lucky.

I have always gathered they are fairly shy birds, but also one that doesn't bother with humans and gardens as much as, say its cousin the Magpie does.

If they're anything like Magpies, a few large nuts will keep them coming back.  I say large nuts because of the fast approaching breeding season, peanuts would be a bit risky.

    Hi Elibee,

you certainly had an influx of Jays!  I bet the BTO survey was a bit suspicious, LOL!

  • Hello from me Remondo, lovely and unusual photographs of your Jay. We have Jays in the wood to the side of our house but they very rarely venture into our garden.

Thanks for your photograph Elibee. I may try your ploy with the acorns and see if I can lure them into the garden.
