Hi everyone,
This afternoon a bird landed on the top of my bird box - the sound of it landing was picked up on the microphone. However, nothing entered the box, but the bird began to call. I have no idea what species the bird might be, and was wondering if anyone could help identify it. I recorded it and put it on Youtube with a video of an empty bird box. (Very messy bird box - blame the blue tit rooster and his mate who hasn't been to clean the box for 6 days. She will get the sack if I see her!!!) I know there are plenty of people on the forum expert in bird calls, and hope someone can identify it.

Yup!!! Mrs Sparrow complains regularly about Mr. Sparrow leaving a mess.
We seem to have one vote each for a sparrow, a finch, a mouse and a nagging Mrs. Bluetit.
Hi Sparrow, it sounds more like a sparrow than any other bird call that I have tried out so far but I wonder whether it might even be a non-wildlife sound which has been picked up (many years back I had a tape/record/radio midi system which picked up a garbled version of the transmissions from police cars and taxi cabs when they were talking on their radios).
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Well done TeeJay ..... give that man a Brownie point.
I heard the pathetic cry again this evening, so out I went and looked about. On the TV aerial was a single starling, crying. It is definitely him the microphone picked up. He must have landed on the box the other day.
What a peculiar voice he has.

Well what do you know. I suppose if one makes enough wild guesses you are bound to get it right sometimes. LOL

Hi Sparrow,
you can clearly hear sparrows chirping in the back ground.
The bird in the foreground is very distorted and sounds like nothing I've heard before!
I don't know if you can alter the microphone settings? or if you can relocate it to get a better sound quality!
Has this bird returned and can you not get a picture!

Nature Is Amazing - Let Us Keep It That Way
Hi Buzzard, and thanks.
I think you did what I have done several times - you picked this thread up at the top of a new page where my question is repeated (I do wish it wouldn't do this!).
The problem is solved! I caught the culprit the other evening. I heard exactly the same cry, but with my own ears rather than the microphone, had a look round the area and saw the noisy critter on the TV aerial. It is a starling of all things!!! He was calling away, all on his own, his friends having gone home to roost.
The microphone actually has excellent sound quality and is very sensitive. My office is filled with beautiful bird song from dawn till dusk, all courtesy of the mic. (I can't normally hear it if the windows are closed.)
thanks for the update and info.
I haven't been on the forum as much as normal. I search through the un-answered questions or Identify this forums were the is a need for advice.
I should read everyones replies and I would have realised this had been answered, I just look for yellow or unaswered questions.
If I see green ticks then I know the person who started the post has been given an answer.
Thanks again, glad you ID the culprit.

Hi Sparrow
So pleased that you got your phantom singer.
Starlings are very vocal, and the one on your box was no acception to the rule
Hi Buzzard
No worries with answers. I know I have overlooked a few of the threads myself when someone had placed an answer so I forget what has been said {must be my age LOL}
There need to be a page comment on top of the pages as well as the bottom of the pages, as it will help draw our eyes to the invisible comments we overlook in the thread,
Regards
Kathy and Sparrow
I always use the 'posts you have not read' shortcut on the right hand side of the forums.

Ditto MarJus. Some members tick their own replies and it is not always correct or even is not meant to be. I think it is just a misunderstanding of knowing when to use the tick facility.
