Hi
I live in a flat with a shared garden. My neighbour in the block has recently been putting out food for the birds. Whilst I wouldn’t usually mind, they are putting out human food including smoked salami, salad with dressing, chicken pasta pots etc. It is mostly pigeons, sea gulls, crows and magpies that eat the food but occasionally there is a robin and thrush that come for it. I’m worried about this food harming the birds especially with chick season coming up. I’ve asked them to watch what they are putting out but they’ve carried on with this stuff. I’m wondering if this food can really harm the smaller birds as I know salty foods isn’t good for them. Please any advise or knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Hi,
I would invite the council to investigate as people shouldn't be fly tipping food waste. Rats are bound to be around, and councils also don't like people feeding gulls and pigeons.
If they eat it i don't see the problem
They are eating it - I’ve seen the thrush take some of the salami before
It's inappropriate food for birds as you say and it will encourage rats, the salt will be the biggest issue as the kidneys of most bird species struggle to process it. Maybe print this out and slide it through the door community.rspb.org.uk/.../Food-fit-for-birds.pdf

I think if you don't see a problem then your on the wrong forum ...seriously I think all you wanna do is cause trouble on here. People are asking genuine questions, seeking help and your reply is certainly not helpful
Perhaps some education on wildlife and birds is needed and you may actually enjoy being part of the community
(Pardon the Scottish Accent)
They may be eating that, but Dog and Cats will eat chocolate that humans eat. But that is not good for dogs or cats to eat
Regards,
Ian.
Thank you for this - very helpful information.
Seagulls and pigeons have been eating human food for a long time you see them scavenging for food on tips and its never harmed any of them. This time of the year they will be glad for anything they can get.
I literally don’t care about the seagulls and pigeons. I was referring to the smaller birds the robin and thrush - these were the birds I was concerned about. I’m well aware that pigeons and seagulls survive on human scraps a lot of time thanks. Sorry for being concerned about small garden birds I thought this is what this community is ALL about :)
