There are many indigenous species of homo sapiens around the world that do eat live wriggly grubs. But not me, well, not intentionally...

I bought some dried mealworms for human consumption from chubbymealwroms.co.uk (as well as a 5 kg bag of the bird ones for my bird table). They didn't smell as attractive as the ones for birds from the RSPB. I can report they are crunchy with a slighlty nutty and salty flavour. The pack says "try them salted or dipped in chocolate. Try them sprinkled on salads or added to soups. They can replace nuts in coookies, cakes and other desserts". So far I've only tried them in soups - they went soggy very quickly and I couldn't really taste them. I think they might be better in salads.

When I was on holiday in Australia I did try kangaroo steak with witchetty grub sauce. That was rather good!

I also think that having raised the possibility of mealworms as dessert, you owe it to us to follow that up. Maybe it’ll be the new salted caramel?

The RSPB will be pleased to hear they sell the best-smelling mealworms, though.
