Can I feed a ‘squirrel mix’ of nuts and seeds to birds too?

Hello! I’m thinking of buying some food for the lovely wildlife I see around my home but I’m not sure if they all can eat the same sort of thing. I’m scared of tossing out a few nuts and accidentally poisoning the poor animals. I was just thinking,https://100001.onl/ the chia seed and nuts mix for squirrels I found online sounds like it may feed birds too. Do you think this might be the case?

  • Hi zhair, you can put mixed seed out but if adding nuts make sure they are not whole ones as at this time of year birds can be feeding young chicks and a whole nut could choke a young bird. You place whole nuts into a dedicated peanut mesh type feeder where birds can only peck off bits of the nut but do not place whole ones out on the ground unless you crush them down into tiny pieces. If you buy dedicated bird food mix each bird will select what they want; finches for example will usually only eat mainly sunflower hearts or nyjer seed. If you are placing food on the ground don't place too much out at once or it may attract unwanted vermin. As long as food is fresh and wildlife friendly it will be ok.
