Advice on coexisting with the possum in my yard?

So I moved in a couple months ago and noticed a couple cats hanging around. I started feeding them and built a few winter shelters, and then began trapping them and having them neutered/spayed and their ears tagged. Recently, I set up a motion camera so that while I’m at work I will know if a cat was trapped, and also so that I can monitor which cats are coming and going so that I know who still needs to be trapped. (There’s only 6 cats by my count so it’s by no means a big colony and I will likely have them all taken care of by the spring which is great because mating season and whatnot)https://snaptube.cam/

Anyway, the past two nights I have caught a opossum eating and hanging out in one of the shelters. I recognize the benefits of a opossum for tick and other bug removal as well as them being less harmful than people think and generally are good for the ecosystem. I guess I’m just curious about where I should go from here because I doubt feeding a possum cat food and giving it a shelter are helpful not only to it but to the neighborhood. I don’t want to trap and release it somewhere else because I read that that’s actually harmful and typically they end up getting killed. And we are in a tick heavy area so he will likely do us very well in the summer.

Are there any deterrents that will stop him from eating cat food? Should I just stop leaving food out at night? Is there anything I can spray around the shelters to keep him away? I was considering also removing the shelters completely since I know the cats probably have other areas they can sleep but I’m not sure. I’d like to care for it while not enabling it to get addicted to cat food and not do it’s job as a marsupial. Thanks for any advice!

  • Hi serjio,     I'm not sure this United Kingdom website can help with questions regarding Opossums as we don't have them in our country so I would try other links such as the ones below where you could ask the same questions.

LINK HERE   and also LINK HERE for Opossum society
