Hi Julie, I had some blue tit chicks fledge a couple of mornings ago, maybe 4 of them popped out and managed to land themselves in branches of the tree holding the nest box. They were all there just before i left for work that day, with parents bringing them food. When i got home that evening the youngsters were nowhere to be seen or heard, and parents were back to their routine of taking food in to box for the remaining chicks. I did worry they'd been taken by magpies (they got our dunnocks) or cats. Yesterday evening however i saw in our front garden the parents taking a group of 3 or 4 babies on a foraging party expedition! I believe these are the chicks we saw fledge a couple of mornings prior, as they've since been back in our back garden today, with parents splitting their feeding between these babies, and the chicks still in our nest box. The front and back garden are part of the same territory for our tits. The youngsters were quite good fliers seemingly very quickly, and were crossing the garden with ease between trees and shrubs. So its likely that your chicks might still be somewhere close by in the parent's territory, but the stronger chicks might be quite mobile already, so you might not be able to see them. We had two more chicks fledge early this morning from the box. They were noticeably smaller and less able to fly themselves up off the ground, so possibly the runts bless them! Just seen parents locating them after taking food to (a now empty) nestbox, and feed them on the ground. Most recently seen them climbing in to a bush - so im happy theyre off the ground and in cover, although cant see or hear them now, and parents dont seem to be feeding them at this moment. Not sure if that helps - but my chicks have fledged over two or three days, and the first party out seemed quite capable of moving away from the nestbox quite early on, whilst remaining in overall territory. Neil
Hi Neil thanks for you reply. I've seen the male come back for food during the day but no sign of any of the chicks, I've no idea how many they had, they must have fledged during the day when I didn't see them, I only saw one chick. I've heard lots of blue tit chicks but I'm not sure they're the ones from my box as there's a few families in the vicinity but great to know what others are doing. I have a feeling they might have been first time parents, more will be revealed at the end of summer when I can have a look in the box and see if anything is in there. Before coming to my box the adults always came from the right of my house and they're still coming that way so I have a feeling they've took their young off to where they lived before hand which makes perfect sense. Hopefully I'll see some young in the garden soon but there's been so many starlings coming it may have frightened them away from my garden. Julie
