An unusual new kind of squirrel is helping itself to my bird's peanuts. Still, I hate to waste good birdfood. Anyone have any good recipes for peanut-fed Brown Rats?
Crafty little devils aren't they. We were at our local garden centre a few weeks ago and they had a bird feeding station set up that had 5 large brown rats on the spill tray below it.

While I love the funnies about rats they can be a serious problem around bird feeders especially if neighbours see them,next thing you know there will be letters to the council health people and local papers will be prophesying the return of the plague.When they show up regularly around our feeders I tend to leave the feeders empty for a few days and stop any ground feeding and they seem to go elsewhere for a while but I do not like doing this when very cold weather means the birds require the extra food.

We have lots of varieties of birds visiting our feeders - including what we refer to as the 'rat tailed tit'. As we have a problem with the local cats helping themselves to our birds, we are hoping that our whiskery friend will prove a distraction to them. He is quite cute though...
