Hi everyone, I am thinking of possibly feeding live mealworms (not very sure how i will do this as i'm not too keen on maggots n' there pretty similar) but i am able to feed dried mealworms atm which they get everytime i fill the feeders.
For those of you who serve alive mealies, what do you need to know? where do you get them? are they really smelly? i've heard there expensive to constantly buy in so best to breed your own, how do you do this (this is on the asumption that i can bare to deal with the alive mealies lol!) What do you do when they bugs turn into beetles? do you feed them the beetles too?
I've been reading that alive mealies are better for chicks, as i have a blue tit in my box atm, i am hoping s/he will nest and have a wee family, so would like to help them along n' provide best for them. I also have 2 male robins (guessing this as they keep chasing each other from my garden) n' they like mealies too. (Also is there any way of getting these robins to share my garden? i know there very teritorial, n' my garden seems to be on the border line of each)
before i think of breeding mealies i will try and buy some n' see if i can stand being near them, (it took me a couple of days getting used to the dried ones) but any help and info would be great. As would be keeping them in shed (once tidied and re-arranged).
I always throw a few out just before dusk, especially for the Robins and then just before dawn, for the same purpose. If I'm in the garden during the day, I sprinkle a few on the ground near to where the Robins hang out and leave them to it. While I'm outside most of the other birds stay on the feeders or wait for me to go back indoors. The Robins will always pop down for more mealies and prefer to take them from the ground, just so long as I don't put them out in the open.

Hi Lucy, I missed a post by you, what came with the mealworms is not bedding but oatmeal for them to eat, you can leave the apple in for a few days but don’t let anything you give them to go off or they will start smelling, if you keep them cool like in a fridge not the freezer they can last for a very long time but take them out now and again to see if you need to clean the container out and put fresh food in I get my oat meal from the supermarket the one with the big M lolI am going to split mine up tomorrow so will take some picture.
If I put any mealworms on the lawn were I feed the birds my blackbirds will find any that crawl under the grass the till their head and listen for them :)

Moulting is normal Lucy, this is when they are getting bigger so need to shed the old one if you have them for a while they can do this a few times, I put them in a bowl and blow the old ones out I turn my head before I inhale or you will get a mouth full of dried skin :)
Thanks guys, I have put a few more out this morning, and will put some out tomoz morning n' see who arrives. I had removed old apple and replaced with fresh, n' they are in new oatmeal too, Ok i have them in the shed where it is cool but not freezing as heater on the low stat. Going to order some more as i think by tomorrow i will have ran out. so best getting that sorted :)
Well i helped a couple of the mealies out of their moulting skins by holding the loose end n' letting them wriggle out. n' then just pick out the moulted skins from others.
Looking forward to having more mealies, n' have noticed 3 robins on my walk to work that i seem to meet, so i may do as MC does and leave them a wee treat when i pass them when i have more of them.
Never heard of anyone helping them out of their old skins before you must be keen Lucy lol
That would be a good idea taking some with you for the Robins you see while walking to work if they are not to far away take a few while your not working they will get to know you and who also brings the treats, after a little while when you see one just hold your hand out with about four mealworm on you just might get one landing on your hand, don’t be afraid and pull your hand away you won’t even feel it land and it won’t peck you.
Sorry I have been that busy I have not had chance to split my mealworms up today so will try tomorrow.
Elevenses, mealie style
Fifteen minutes later...
Wow, Christmas dinner come early :)
They do have a liking for runner beans and they're not messy either, so there's rarely anything to remove the next day.
I have just fed mine some baby brussel sprouts 'cos it's all I had handy!!! Must say that there is nothing left over when I've fed them finely sliced carrot!
LL, you made me laugh at helping them out of their 'jim-jams' Lol
Mealies and brussel sprouts? No naked flames!!!
