Mealworms Alive or Dried?

Hi everyone, I am thinking of possibly feeding live mealworms (not very sure how i will do this as i'm not too keen on maggots n' there pretty similar) but i am able to feed dried mealworms atm which they get everytime i fill the feeders.

For those of you who serve alive mealies, what do you need to know? where do you get them? are they really smelly? i've heard there expensive to constantly buy in so best to breed your own, how do you do this (this is on the asumption that i can bare to deal with the alive mealies lol!) What do you do when they bugs turn into beetles? do you feed them the beetles too?

I've been reading that alive mealies are better for chicks, as i have a blue tit in my box atm, i am hoping s/he will nest and have a wee family, so would like to help them along n' provide best for them. I also have 2 male robins (guessing this as they keep chasing each other from my garden) n' they like mealies too. (Also is there any way of getting these robins to share my garden? i know there very teritorial, n' my garden seems to be on the border line of each)

before i think of breeding mealies i will try and buy some n' see if i can stand being near them, (it took me a couple of days getting used to the dried ones) but any help and info would be great. As would be keeping them in shed (once tidied and re-arranged).

Thanks Lucy
  • I can get a lot of starling here more then I would like they fight a squabble between themselves and scare the other smaller birds off, I like them but they can be a nuisances at time.

This is a picture from the perch I made.

  • Thanks James and MC, I like how you made the perch, i think  (when i have time...being on here has given me so many projects i wanna do...its now a long list lol!) i will try and make a perch along the idea of your's James, it is lovely :) I had a feeling that the Starlings would munch as much as they can... So i will have a couple in a tub n' do some gardening as the "Manager" will surely come to inspect whats going on, and will then open the tub n' leave it n' go n' sit down a bit away from him, so he gets the idea of the tub = mealies, This way he is sure not to miss out :) n' i'll maybe try with the starling who's a bit braver than the rest, just need to try and work out how to give to my wee blue tit, without the Mob noticing :) this is going to be interesting!

  • Just a wee update, went to my local pets at home last night, they didnt have any mealworms in stock so will have to call up in a few days and get a few set aside for me! hoping by weekend i will have some alive mealies...

  • Thanks for the update Lucy, and I hope they have some in next time you call in.

  • Update:

Well guess what i got last night! Alive mealies! phoned pets at home n' requested 250g, partner picked them up for me n' i only have 50g...but oh well i will see how we get on... So i put them in a big plastic sweety tub with their bedding n' gave them some apple slices.

    Here they are:

    They're hungry little things

I also tore some kitchen roll up n' put bits ontop of them. Some were molting, is this normal? Please if you notice anything that isn't right let me know :) going to feed them on saturday so robin n' blue tit have a chance to have some as the "Squad" will sure have them all gone in seconds.

I was brave enough yesterday to pick one up and hold it :) you're right their "Nicer" than maggots but convincing my mind at times is challenging. When i took them home they seemed to be more lively, is this because to start of with they were in the warmth of the house than in the shed where they are now? do they slow down when they are cold? is this a good thing? heater on i shed on the stat to keep shed from being too cold and damp. When will they need cleaned? Do i remove the apple pieces tonight n' put fresh?

When i get my next batch (well i think i will be) i will get the 250g would this tub be big enough for all of them or would i be best seperating them? As for cleaning wise i have a spare tub n' was thinking of having a tub sitting ready for them to shift into n' them clean the tub they were in n' have it sitting ready for the shift again.

Thanks for all your help and info so far guys! can't wait to see my robins face when theres alive mealworms for the taking.

  • Brave LL, confronting your fears!  Just ordered 250g from the place TJ recommended but don't know how long they'll take with all the extra Xmas post but hopefully will arrive in time as Xmas gift to my birds!

Edit:  & this time will have to padlock the shed door to stop the thieving Starlings from cleaning them out again!!!

  • Well i am being brave in the hopes that my wee blue tit will consider having a nest in my box this year as the onsite restaurant serves a wide varation of good food :) even tho 1/2 the time The Squad invade and eat most of it, Service will be improving too as to whenever the feeders are near empty they get filled instead of when they are empty.

Also i'm hoping this will give me the chance for the birds to slow down a bit n' allow me to photograph them a bit more easily. I would like to also be able to study them more and try and tell them apart such as the 2 male robins that are fighting over my garden (starlings i have NO chance! they will just be the squad or one of the squad lol - same for the crows will just be the Mob).

Hope ur delivery arrives before Xmas too. I am going to get some more from pets at home and take up north on xmas day to give to my grans garden birds she has soo many species such as sparrows, robin, GT, BT, Wagtails (WT?), BB, Thrushs, Green Finch, Chaffinch to name a few so hopefully get a good few pics too!

After that I will source from same place as you, Thankfully my Squad and the Mob arn't able to access shed as locked with sliding lock...but i wouldn't put it past them to be learning how, they all watch my ever move when feeding time...

  • Lucy, if you want to get some close-ups of birds you might want to consider a window feeder. The one I've got attaches to the outside of the glass using suckers. This enables you to watch the birds from inside the house.

Here's a little video I shot of one dealing with the mealies. They are messy little devils and seem to like to draw the innards out and flick it all over the place.

If you try one it might be better to wait until the breeding season. The urgency of needing to feed the chicks makes them much bolder and almost oblivious of your presence.
