Hello. I'm quite upset as yesterday sparrow killed blue tits and killed or scared off their parents (I have a box in my garden). Are there any ways to prevent this and to help blue tits to survive. Any feeders that sparrows will not access that can be recommended?
Sorry about that. We have the same problem here, esp regarding them destroying house martin nests.
I am assuming you are referring to a sparrow getting into the blue tit nest box. Too late now, but a plate over the entrance so the size is reduced is the only answer.....or replace the box for one with a smaller entrance. Both need to be done for next year, not now.
In the short term, sparrows are cowards so are easily scared off. Just a human nearby is enough usually (though not always.....).
I should also have said re feeding. I am against supplementary feeding for various reasons. I therefore would recommend you stop for future years, esp as you have sparrows which breed like rabbits with multiple broods. Depends what reason you have as to whether feeding is worthwhile. For me, conservation means I won't feed. Counter intuitive, but feeding birds here = fewer threatened species in and around the garden......during the Spring & Summer.
