Broken nestbox

Hi,

I really need some expert advice on some beautiful blue tits.

we brought a cheap nestbox for decoration going back many moons ago. Just over a week ago I noticed there for first time been activity. There seems to be blue tits that have nested there. My concern is that it’s not a secured nest box as held up by one weak nail into the tree. The nestbox fell in the wind so bottom panel is broken and in an attempt we used little duck tape. This wasn’t place on well either because we was concerned for the mother to go back to the babies.

we now have purchased a steady bird nest from RSPB. Never want this to happen again as I’m full of guilt. Othasly we can’t transfer the nest. But I’m so concerned that the box there nested in is not safe. We fully learnt our lesson and adore wildlife.
I feed the birds and am awear I should have known better but what am I best to do from any experts. I just need guidance and not made to feel guilty than I feel. I would never hurt any animal specially the birds

  • Hi Jemmalouise, welcome to the community,  I wouldn't be too hard on yourself as you see old broken bird houses all over the place even in woodland on RSPB sites! There aint much you can do now as you say just fingers crossed, not all babies make it to fledgling stage due to lots of factor, mainly food sources with weather being extremely hot and dry and lack of caterpillars and bugs.....then obviously the ones that do manage to fledge  can be predated but this is just nature .

Others may have better advice than me to offer but all nests are protected by law as I am sure you are aware.

To make you feel less guilty its not just nest boxes that can be unstable as I found a full nest on the ground in my garden, could have been another bird or a Squirrel or even a cat thats brought it down.

Good luck and hope you get to see some youngsters
