Canadian Geese -Can a pair take over a nest and eggs?

I currently live at Salford Quays where we look onto a basin of water. We have 2 nesting Canadian Geese. Yesterday 3 other geese flew into the water causing the male to fly down into the water to defend the nest. I assume it was the male from the nesting pair that nearly drowned one of the geese. Currently there is one on the nest which I assume is the nesting female with the male making those pecking signals and noises around her head, which she is doing back. But the geese that arrived yesterday are walking close to the nest and haven’t moved. The male will fly towards them if they get to close. What I can’t work out is why the 2 geese that are near the nest after such a fight: there is lots of noises ( most of the night) Is it possible that the 2 on the nest are not the original 2 geese and that 2 more dominant have taken over the nest? It’s really strange to watch. It’s hard to explain what is happening. But is it known that geese can take over another’s nest and eggs? I just don’t understand after a fight why these other 2 are still pacing near the nest … this is what makes me think they are the original pair that have been removed from their nest hence why they haven’t moved on. We have only had 2 geese on this basin for weeks, since they’ve been nesting. Hope this all makes sense.
