trying to feed birds in my garden but pigeons always come

i been using bird feeders with balls, another with seeds, to try and attract the smaller birds to my garden to eat as i hear them when out on walks but all i get are pigeons and groups of them. sometimes they try and get seed out of the feeder, one time they even knocked one off causing it to smash and eat the seed!

we have a bird house in our garden thats been out there for a year but no bird has ever used it.

also at one point my dad got rid of the bird feeders even during these cold times when birds need to eat to stay warm, saying he doesnt want any more pigeons 'sh**ting in my garden'.

i'm trying to help the small birds - who here are mainly house sparrows - but am not getting much luck.

also some neighbours have now cut down trees!

what else can i do? anything?

  • Hanging feeders shouldn't be accessible to pigeons. Fitting hooks to bird tables will work. What sort of bird house is it? Something on a bird table?

no its a bird house i got hung on our garage wall with a hole and a little roof.
we even tried hanging food from there but not working in attracting birds.

the pigeons are getting desperate and smart and even tried chipping away at the balls in awkward positions on our washing line!

If you've had hard frosts recently that may have altered the pigeons' behaviour, and they may revert to type with the thaw.
A bird bath (cleaned and refilled regularly) will help attract birds... but not just little ones. "Guardian Feeders" are another option, they have a cage around the food so larger birds can't get to the food.
I wouldn't advise upsetting parents tho!

Robbo... we've a collared dove that has worked out how to use hanging feeders, and where we lived previously a female blackbird worked out how to hang on a feeder there and get to the suet nuggets
