Herring gulls - where do they go when they've finished breeding?

We have a gull that visits regularly during March - June each year, before and during nesting amidst nearby chimney pots. He does sometimes visit outside those months or have mini spates but generally he rarely comes outside breeding season and we don't see him in the area. He's quite distinctive BTW.

So where does he go? To the seashore (less than a mile away), abroad on his holidays...?

Also, will him and his missus stay together every day, wherever they are, or will they just meet up again when it's time to breed?

And: do the parents stay in touch with their children or do they just abandon them? On a recent visit to the beach, it seemed to be mostly young speckled gulls hanging out together with relatively few adults knocking around.

Thanks
