Help in identifying what seems to be an unusual chaffinch

The bird below has come into our garden a few times, hanging out with chaffinches. Perhaps it is a male chaffinch variant. The wings look chaffinch like in their pattern and colouring, but the head lacks the grey of a male and the body is more colourful than a female. I don't think it is a different species - well it doesn't look like anything in the guides I have. I'd appreciate some identification help. Thanks.
