Gull ID Please

Had 2 of these overhead today making a lot of noise. No idea when it comes to Gulls. Help much appreciated

  • I think it's a herring gull, Linda. I can see it has mirrors at its wingtips and the feathers on its back look pale.

The noise should have sounded like the classic 'laughing', quite high pitched and not grumpy like the great black-back.
  • It appears to have a fairly chunky bill so I would say it was one of the larger gulls. The upper wings don't appear to be dark so that would rule out the black-backed gulls. My guess would be Herring Gull. The markings on the wing tips would appear to be consistent with that. Here's some typical calls which may help with the ID.

Paul A is good on gulls so you might want to wait for his opinion.

  • Crossed post with Clare but at least we agree
  • Thanks Clare and Tony...Herring Gull it is and the calls were spot on.I get lots of gulls here with the schools out the back so hopefully learn all the different ones now.

    Thanks again Wink
