What's the best time of day to see red kites?

I have googled and it seems quite varied in the responses but I wondered what is the best time to go see red kites. We have some local but I haven't seen them. Some sites say that thermals play an important part for the bigger raptors and some say the red kite is an exception to this. Any advice would be great, thanks.

  • I would say that it depends on what you want to do. If you want to photogarph them too, then choose a time when the weather is fine & the light is good. Otherwise they are fairly easy to spot whether flying, roosting in a tree, on a post or feeding on the ground, if you know where to go.

  • Like most big raptors the Red Kite likes to take advantage of thermals so it is often mid morning before they seem to perform best
