Lonely swan this time of year?

There is a lonely swan living near a weir on the river Leven, behind my house. I've seen him/her the past few days I've been down here. Is it safe for them to be alone this time of year? Is it safe that it's chose this place to live alone this time of year?

I cannot see any great danger in an adult Swan living alone on a river. An adult on its own can often be one that has sadly lost its partner and not mated up with another or one thart just has not mated.
