Head the sound of this bird for the first time for many years

  • In reply to Seaman:

    Rufous morphs are stunning, Pete.

Pretty much had lunch with one in Tuscany years ago.

How do you tell the sexes apart (me not being much of a Cuckoo authority)?
  • In reply to Dave - CH:

In this case Dave there was a great colour difference with the male being grey against the brown/rust of the female. Without this I would not have dared to try separate the sexes in flight. The female also has a burbling call in return to the males call

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • In reply to Seaman:

    Super. Thank you Pete.

Will hopefully be in Cuckoo territory soon. Will keep my burbling ears on.

  • In reply to Dave - CH:

About 10 years ago a small group of us visited the Summer Isles off N.W. Scotland an we seemed to be hearing the "cuckooing" call and the replying females burbling call all day long. I don't think I have heard so many Cuckoos in one day. The boatman come guide come postmaster said that was a fairly normal summertime day for them, pure magic to us visitors.
