Busy finch day

Today seems to be finch day in my garden. I’ve had an unusual amount of finches visit but I think that’s great! Normally, I only get goldfinch and the odd greenfinch but today I’ve had 20+ goldfinch, 4 greenfinch and 2 male chaffinch (first time for the garden and one of them had pretty bad feet). Also, there’s a male collared dove who’s getting amorous with the ladies (by that I mean keep trying to mount them). I took a few photos, not fantastic but they were taken through my binoculars a so I don’t think they’re too bad.

  • Interesting taking photos through your bins Ellis, they are clear enough to id your birds which is often all you need. Cold damp and windy in our garden but our three pair of Bullfinch are still busy and the pair of Blackcaps are still looking as if they are setting up home.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • Very windy here too, I really like bullfinches however they seem to be quite hard to find around my area. I remember the first time I spotted one and I was surprised at how bright white they are underneath
  • We are very lucky as they have bred for many years in the gardens around our flats,3 pair most years but 4 pair a couple of years. I'm not sure where the youngsters go, I am hoping to get one of my ringer friends to do some ringing and we get some feed back on their travels

  • A nice set of photos Ellis.

I'm curious, you've been taking photos through your binoculars, would that be with a smartphone and coupling attachment or just smartphone straight on to the binoculars eye cup?

  • I used to just use my phone against the eyecup but the lighting would vary due to the angle I had my phone at and most of the photos I took were pretty bad. Then I bought an adapter but it didn’t really fit, even when I tried to make it work. Nowadays, I use an elastic band to get the right fit and just take as many photos as possible, one of them generally is good

For example, the lighting is off and the image is super blurry

You're doing extremely well, because stray light can be your enemy, as you've found out.

If you search Amazon, eBay and most good photography/optical outlets, you can get adapters for very sensible money, which will be more durable than a large elastic band, which will in time snap.

Though I don't use one myself, I've seen lots of people using them with very acceptable results.
