Dave, BirdTrack is the system run by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) where users map out the areas they wish to enter records for and these plus results from regular surveys such as Breeding Birds Survey and monthly Waterbird surveys all help make the large part of the bird numbers we regularly refer to. Any birds that are entered that seem out of season or place are flagged up to check if it is a true sighting or a mis entry, probably not perfect but what is ?
