Big Garden Birdwatch 2022 - what did you see ?

Although you will be submitting your official count via rspb,  you may like to tell us for interest what you managed to see in your chosen hour so feel free to add your sightings here.

We only have a large 35ft x 10ft balcony with water garden below;   I do not count the birds in the trees adjoining the balcony and decided not to submit the birds on the water below.    I had a list of birds we normally see on the balcony but had to add the Dunnock who put in an appearance 15 mins after starting the hours count !       Despite storm Malik on its way, conditions were calm enough to get a head start;   went quiet for 10 mins so maybe the magpie was hanging around as he did almost start the count after the wren arrived first.       Ok, here's what we saw on our balcony which just goes to show you can get quite a few different species even with limited area.     The count brought a good range of species but the blue tits only turned out in a max of 4 at one time when we normally see.a minimum of 6 and up to a dozen at once !     Just got the count in before the wind picked up thankfully.   Food on offer:  sunflower hearts, peanuts, suet cake, live mealworms.

  • That’s ok. I have posted a thread about the 1962-1963 winter and how that winter known as the big freeze affected wildlife particularly wild birds. For those born after that winter might find it interesting also on how some small birds changed there diet just to survive that winter as finding food was so very difficult for all wildlife during that winter with some links.

    Regards,

    Ian.

  • I've just submitted my sightings on the balcony; there wasn't a Nuthatch listed anywhere on their additional list which seems surprising when they list a Red Kite. !! I entered it in a blank box they provide. .
