Hedgehog Morning Visit

Found this little prickly creature walking across our lawn this morning.  Just had to get a photo.

  • What time was this Ed? Always a bit of a concern to see them out in daylight but possibly a Mum foraging for food for little ones! Do you put food out for them?

    Hi Wendy,

08:21 this morning. This is our first sighting of a hedgehog in our garden. We have had plenty of evidence that we have them during the night but I have caught nothing on Trail Cam yet. We do not put out food for them yet. We will be helping them where we can from now on. I will be researching what they will need to keep going and multiply.
    Kind regards

  • Kitten biscuits from Tesco, Sainsbury's or Purina brand are popular but would need to be under cover so cats/foxes can't snaffle them ... a simple see through storage box with access hole should do & maybe a house for winter hibernation?

Thank you for that advice. We will take it up. We have recently moved into our house and are in the process of getting the garden sorted out. At the moment we have 1/2 acre of grass and are surrounded on three sides by open fields. We are having an 8m wildlife pond dug soon and have planned wildlife areas all around the garden for the purpose of encouraging wildlife to come in. We want to see more bees and butterflies and what ever else decides to show up. :-)
  • Sounds like exciting times are ahead so please keep us updated with pics & info!

  • Captured this image of this little guy/gal today.  Absolutely love these little ones.  :-)

    Wendy,

Captured this image today at 17:30.  Was walking well, quickly and seemed to know where it was going.  Not too big so think it is a Juvenile.  Will be setting a feeding station up over the weekend.

  • Keep your eye on that one Ed, if juvenile then out a bit early in day!  Good news about the feeding station!

  • If you're putting food out at night and there's none left in the morning, don't assume the hedgehog has had it all, local cats may be helping themselves, and possibly other nighttime visitors.

But still put the food out, and if you've a trailcam, it may be worth setting one up to capture the nocturnal activities.
