Bearded Vulture in the Peak District

I was sent this BBC News link today which shows a rare UK sighting of a Bearded Vulture in the Peak District

  • Thanks for the updates Alan; Really hoping Vigo does start heading across the channel soon and in to more suitable feeding grounds as she makes her way back southwards towards her native homeland in the Alps; I'm worried she is probably losing body condition but know the VCF are monitoring the situation. Do you know if she would be likely to fly at night as I understand some of the species do ?

  • Thanks, Alan, do you know if anyone is putting food out for her? Like Hazel, I'm concerned that she may not have had enough (or possibly nothing?) since leaving the north.

    Kind regards, Ann

  • Thanks Alan,   what a thrill it has been to have this special bird visit England and hope she continues on her way to France.

Call me soppy  LOL   but in thanks to Vigo I've strung a few very quick words together as her sightings and story touched so many people .......................

Over the hills and far away

A vulture steals from its morning prey

Eating bones from a carcass she has found

Before flying the channel northward bound

She roosts in a place called Abbey Brook

A Derbyshire area which looks so picture book

Stays three months thrilling all who see

Those outstretched wings as she soars so free

Crowds flock to catch the briefest look

To tick that sighting in their book

For Vigo travelled all that way

Over land and dale for her long stay

Now summers over she says goodbye

To those who saw her in the sky

This stranger who arrived upon our shore

we learned to appreciate and adore

Like a vessel in port she waits her chance

To cross the channel and back into France

Gods speed and fair winds, we wish you well

For a magical story we now can tell.

  • Awh! Lovely Hazy, Lets hope she receives all our good vibes for a safe journey back to her home base.

  • Good to know she has been feeding up for her journey.

Lovely poetry Hazy, I'm not as clever as you but I wish her safe journey wherever she goes. Fly high big bird.

    Lot to learn

  • Good news, forecast is good too I think, bon voyage indeed.

    Lot to learn

  • What a relief to hear she's homeward bound now in decent weather and on her final flight path, was good whilst it lasted and wish this wonderful bird a safe journey home. Thanks for all the updates Alan, it has been an incredible pleasure to have had this Lammergeier visit our shores.

  • I like the way the Buzzard is escorting her. Hope she makes it all the way back to the Alps

  • Nice to see she has a wingman/woman escorting her offshore,  a nice send off without the corvids this time  !   I hope we get more good news as Vigo heads home, always a worry as I saw one of the young reintroduced Lammergeiers (Dolomie) was shot dead in France :(  recently;   it breaks your heart when you read of such cruelty.

  • I saw that, Hazel. It's sickening how hunters think they can just kill what they fancy. It's beyond my comprehension the mentality of people who kill wildlife just for fun.

I was pleased to read that the French courts rescinded the French Government authorising the killing of 18000Turtle Doves. A small victory but I fear it will take a generation of more enlightened people before much changes.
