Today I remembered that about 8 years ago the nest box produced a surprise. I have a Barn Owl box in the Ash tree 20 metres in front of the house which has also been very successful over the years. September 8 years ago when I was scanning the field where the Kestrel box is I noticed a white fluffy head inside the box, this later turned out to be 3 Barn Owl chicks. The Kestrel box had already produced a brood of Kestrels earlier in the year and now it was home to what I assumed was a second brood for the Barn Owls.
I was concerned that it was a bit late in the year for them and I sought the advice of RSPB staff and they assured me that they would probably be fine which indeed they appeared to be.

How lovely Nev, Barn Owls & Kestrels on your door stop. I would get nothing done as I would be in the armchair watching them all day!!
