EDIT : I've had a bit more of a look but can't find better than my original thoughts, have a look at this site mike http://www.dipode-vie.net/Arachnides/Araneidae/Araneus/diadematus.html & see what you think. Not sure if it'll translate but I find it very good, with clear explications.
It may be a young one as the colours are very pale.
