I only found this out a week ago but the Comma butterfly gets its name from the distinct white mark on the underside of it's wing that resembles a Comma.
What a lovely photo :)
I mentioned this on here a while ago - the scientific name also references that marking. The species name c-album means 'white "c"'. (The genus name Polygonia means 'many-angled', describing the wing shape.)
Plover, Excellent photo, however hard I try Commas always seem to come out looking scraggy.
Thanks Aiki and Bob. It looks as though its been a good year for Peackocks, small tortoiseshells and Comma's - they needed it. Sadly though I've only seen two Red Admirals so far.
