A couple of weeks ago Limpy and I had a couple of nights away in Wales. It was well worth the drive from the Suffolk coast as we managed to arrive at the Cors Dyfi reserve just as they were ringing their osprey chicks! The place was buzzing with excitement as we entered and it turned out that proud parents Monty and Glesni had produced two girls this year. Glesni is three years old and has proven herself a magnificent first time mother. Naturally a few photos were taken:
In the last picture Monty is delivering a fish to the nest.
There were some lovely birds at the feeders too:
Hope you enjoy them.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Thanks Clare, you've had a good birding time this year, I've enjoyed ALL yours and Limpy's photo's from around the UK :-)

Clare, Thanks so much for the photos and report. I remember when you were going there and was afraid I had missed the resulting photos, but here they are! Glad you had a good trip. Loved the Red Kites, too--Red Kites are great!
Bob, You might like to wait until they build the new centre which will be much closer to the nest! I think I read about it on the Dyfi website so you might find something there about it. I seem to recall they said it would be ready for next year's Osprey season, though that may be optimistic.
Kind regards, Ann

Those are gorgeous photos Clare and a great report. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and I was in Talsarnau which is a small village on the opposite side of the estuary from the more famous Portmeirion (of "the Prisoner" fame). Quite close to there is an Osprey site and I don't know if it's somehow connected to the site you visited, as through the scopes provided in the visitors' centre the nest appeared as in your photos, however they also had a large Plasma screen with a direct live feed from the nest and another with footage from the previous year.
Thanks, Clare, It is good to know the new centre is being worked on now, so ready next year sounds very likely. I hope we will see the Ospreys there one day. We were at Birdfair Sunday and saw 4 of the 5 Ospreys at the Manton Bay nest at Rutland Water late in the afternoon--they are the first Ospreys we have seen in person in Britain (having seen some years ago on holiday in the USA). The parents at Rutland were resting on poles, and one youngster was on the nest with its beak open so probably yelling for fish, but the parents were facing away from it and ignoring it! Another youngster was flying over the water, then began a sort of half-hearted dive but pulled up out of it only inches from the water's surface. So we almost saw an Osprey fishing!
Hi, John - I don't think there's any connection between the two sites as Cors Dyfi isn't RSPB (though it is next door to Ynis Hir, which is). We visited Glaslyn last year - we enjoyed the visit very much even though we didn't actually see any ospreys there. It was late in the season and they were all out and about.
Ann, I'm delighted you saw the Rutland birds - the fifth Manton Bay bird has actually migrated.
Thanks, Clare, Ospreys certainly are fantastic creatures, so full of character and simultaneously looking both mussed and fierce!
Clare Ive just seen your photos of your time at Dyfi and the Red Kite feeding station (cant remember the full name!!) I was there in the middle of July and thoroughly enjoyed it too. So much, that I went again a few days later, before heading home. Your photos are wonderful and brought back some lovely memories. I cant wait to go back again very soon. :-) thank you again.
I can't pronounce the full name, Seagull! I thought it was fantastic - wish it was closer to me.
Good report, Clare. Glad you and Limpy enjoyed your visit. I've never been to that part of Wales but it looks lovely.
Great photos too especially the Red Kites. They are a favourite of mine because I see them everyday where I live although not on the scale of the feeding station. Must have been quite a sight.
