Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2015

Figured since all the other ospreys have new threads, I'd start a new thread for the nearest (visitable) nest to me, Balgavies Loch. There seemed to be a few people in the hide so I didn't go in as I had the dogs with me to read the log to see what has been happening. I know most people don't mind the dogs but if it is busy we give the hide a miss. We did the walk around the loch and saw plenty of action from the ospreys. The male chased off a heron and flew overhead before he got down to some frisky stuff with the female, so I guess that means they don't have eggs yet?

Had great time at Balgavies last year and I'll not miss this beautiful nest in my next trip to Scotland. Eagerness to get there is mounting!

I have seen comments elsewhere which suggest that last year's pair are back.

I am always getting facts wrong, and end up in long discussions when I apologise, but at the risk of that happening again.... Green BF(04) m, and White UK(09) the female.

Sue's data suggest that Green BF(04)was from Haddow, from unknown parents.

White UF(09) is also of unknown parentage. They both started breeding at Balgavies in 2012. She returned on 5 April, and he was around on 10 April. These dates were posted on a public forum, on a completely different subject!

2012 Chick Blue YD(12) who was tagged. He returned to the UK last year, but his signal was lost in Yorkshire. 2013 three chicks were unringed. Last year I only have the note that the second chicks fledged 20 July.

Any updates or more importantly, corrections(!), welcome.

Last years chicks were also unringed, the tree they are nesting on isn't very stable and there is too much of a risk to climb it to ring or tag the chicks on that nest (or so I was told anyway!). It is highly unlikely that this years chicks will be ringed either.

Hopefully next time I'm there the hide will be quiet, though it was the busiest I've ever seen the carpark so maybe the secret is out!

I can confirm two chicks in 2014, Sheila, not ringed. The first was really active with repeated small flights and dives, when the second fledged on the 20th. I'm unaware what was the initial size of the clutch, I obviously like to believe that it was only two.
