Apologies if I got it wrong - I didn't think it looked bright yellow enough or clear enough spots to be 22, but happy to admit any mistake.

This is also a photo of a 16 spot with no 'hammer shape' - just to confuse things further.

As you say, you are normally 'spot on' with your i.d. Skills, so I'm happy to go along with your judgement.

22 Spot Ladybeetle

the 22 spot commonly lacks a black stripe down the middle of its wing case and has 22 spots but the spots arnt normally fused

Yours is the 16 spot Ladybeetle

16 Spot Ladybeetle

the 16 spot ladybeetle doesnt have the hammer shaped markings on it but it does have a black stripe down the middle of the wing case and spots that mesh with, join up, fused and connect to each other forming a line on the side of its wing cases this is some of the main identification features

that can help distinguish the 16 spot from the 14 spot and the 22 spot

an anchor shaped pattern on its wing cases

Out In the end neither of us got it right really anyway since I acidently put 16 instead of 14 which comfused things even more.
