What does Nyger seed grow into ?

  Teasels are much loved by flower arrangers (that is my 'other hat') especially when dried. I always believed that nyger or niger grew into thistle of some sort, so thanks Sparrow for sorting that out. I might try planting some if I can find some that might germinate.

  Aren't goldfinches meant to be really attracted to sunflowers too? Or are all finches attracted to sunflowers?

  Goldfinches enjoy sunflower hearts and nyjer. I find mine have no real preference. This is why I hang 4 feeders together, 2 with SH and 2 with nyjer. They can choose, and frequently swap from one to the other.

  Yes I have a sunflower mix (Jacobi Jayne Special Mix blend 2) in one of mine, and when there is an argument between the male goldfinches on the nyjer seed, one of them hops over to the sunflower mix.

  In fact everything loves the sunflower mix; the robins, goldfinches, siskins and all of the tits eat it every day. You can just see a goldfinch on the sunflower in this shot:

  Sorry Woodpecker, all I see is a red cross again!

  All my crew like sunflower hearts, including sparrows, dunncks, robins, jackdaws, starlings (of course) and pigeons. I am mean with the pigeons and give them ordinary seed mix, but they still steal the SH's from the trays.

  I buy sunflower heart chips from Street End Feeds.

  Where can I get some really good Nyger, I often bake with it putting it in some of my baked goods.  It's similar to flaxseed when cooked but I enjoy the taste better.  I also want to grow it for the purpose of putting it in herbal tea. Hoooooooooa Hoooooooooooa
