The hedgerows around Radipole are very abundant and colourful now as we move into early summer. This is the time when Radipole's orchids start to appear by the paths. I counted three Southern Marsh Orchids in the early stages of flowering on the Buddleia Loop this afternoon. I hope plenty more are on their way. The Bee Orchid I passed twice this afternoon before I noticed it in the grass by the path to the North Hide. Bee Orchids are an opportunist plant and can turn up in unexpected places. Some years it is abundant on a particular site and in others it can be sparse. Both pictures below were taken this afternoon.
The year 2009 was a particularly orchid abundant year when 32 Bee Orchids and 170 Southern Marsh Orchids were counted around the reserve. Other orchids to look for on Radipole is the Common Spotted Orchid which normally appears on the Buddleia Loop near the viewing shelter and the Pyramidal Orchid which flowers in July and is usually by the path down to the North Hide.
It certainly will Nick, so you will let us know won't you!? Have any been reported on Lodmoor, can't say I've seen them on my travels?
Seize the day!
More SMOs to the south of the locked gate than i can remember in recent times. Several are absolute stonkers too. Be interesting to see what orchid meadow and secret gdn counts reveal.
This afternoon (09-Jun): minimum 20 SMOs before-gated bridge to N hide; 6 Bee Orchids between "kissing gate" and "staff gate" by path to N hide; 1 Bee Orchid still on E side Buddleia loop - becoming more concealed by vegetation. Good to see they all survived the gales and rain.
Thank you for all your kind comments. I am away from Radipole for the next two Fridays, which is my volunteer day, returning on Friday 22nd June. I would appreciate any information on the the lastest orchid counts and where they are on Radipole and Lodmoor to keep our records up to date. If there is a plant on Radipole or Lodmoor that you would like identified you are welcome to send in a photo or let me or Nick Q know where it is and i will identify it for you.
The 13 SMOs became 16 this morning according to Bob (theBirder) Ford, so merrily rushing along despite the weather!
